The Medicine Wheel tool was inspired by the ancient circular stone structures found in Alberta and the states. Used for over 5700 yeears by Cree, Blackfoot, Sioux, Cheyenne and Crow and many more. The word Medicine Wheel is a non Indigenous term. Indigenous peoples will also call it, the sacred wheel of life and sacred hoop of life.

A Medicine Wheel is a symbolic representation commonly used in Indigenous cultures of North America, particularly among Native American and First Nations peoples. It acts as a tool for understanding the interconnectedness of life, health, and spirituality. The wheel is typically circular, symbolizing the cyclical nature of existence, and is divided into four sections, each representing different aspects of life and the natural world.

Key Elements of the Medicine Wheel:

1. **The Four Directions**: Each quadrant of the wheel corresponds to one of the cardinal directions;  North, East, South, and West. Each direction is associated with specific qualities, elements, and teachings:
   - **East**: Represents new beginnings, new born/baby stage of life, the dawn of a new day/rising of tthe sun. It is often linked to the element of  Water, aspect of Emotional Self and the Spring season.
   - **South**: Represents embarking on a new jpurney, youth stage of life and learning. Is often linked to growth, activity, warmth, self awareness, trust and the aspects of Physical Self. Associated with the element of Earth and the Summer season, .
   - **West**: Represents deep introspection, going within, healing, and maturity. Associated with the element of Air and the Autumn season, it reflects adulthood and  getting into the deeper understanding of self and learning to tap into the wisdom gained through experience. Learning from lessons. It is connected to the aspect of Mental Self.
   - **North**: Represents adapting, acceptance, Shaman, mastery, a "Sage", Elder stage of life. It is connected to the element of Fire , the aspect of  Spiritual Self and the Winter season.

2. **The Four Aspects of Life**: The wheel also encompasses four domains of existence:

 **Physical**: Relating to the performance of the physical body and health.

**Emotional**: Involving feelings, emotions in action, relationships, and emotional health.

**Mental**: Concerned with intellect , comprehension, growth or fixed mindset, mental health.

**Spiritual**: Pertaining to beliefs, values, connection to the universe and spiritual evolution.                                                                                                                                                                                                            3. **Healing and Balance**: The Medicine Wheel is often used as a framework for holistic healing, emphasizing the importance of balance among the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of life. It serves a guide for personal growth and community well-being.

4. **Cultural Significance**: The Medicine Wheel is a sacred symbol, with each Indigenous group interpreting its meanings and uses differently. It is frequently employed  with on the land teachings, rituals, and ceremonies to promote harmony and facilitate understanding of one’s place in the universe.


In summary, the medicine wheel serves as a powerful educational and spiritual tool, embodying the interconnectedness of life and the significance of maintaining balance in all aspects of existence.
